FLORENCE - Two arrests have been made in the death of 3-year-old Kaiden Garner, whose "lifeless body" was taken to North Alabama Medical Center on Aug. 12.
Blake Joshwell Townsend, 20, Florence, was arrested Wednesday on a Lauderdale County grand jury indictment of capital murder, Florence police said.
Yalrick Zeonsha Pride, 20, Florence, was arrested on an indictment charge of child abuse, police said.
Townsend is in the Lauderdale County Detention Center without bond, authorities said. Pride is in the detention center, with bail set at $15,000.
Police Chief Ron Tyler said detectives have worked diligently on the case ever since Kaiden's "lifeless body" was taken to the medical center.
Initially, the boy's death was thought to be from heat exposure, but the autopsy indicated he was "beaten to death," Tyler said.
"Kaiden Garner was a 3-year-old great-looking little boy who had all his life ahead of him," Police Chief Ron Tyler said. "He had lots of family and friends that cared very deeply for him."
Tyler praised the efforts of the Florence Police Detective Division.
"These guys have spent countless hours on this investigation," he said. "They have interviewed many people. They have executed numerous search warrants and they have been relentless in this investigation."
Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly said the grand jury stated killed Kaiden "by beating him and/or punching him and/or kicking him, causing lacerations of the child's liver and other internal and external injuries."
