Parole denied for Colbert County murderer

MONTGOMERY – A man serving for murder and another for securities and insurance fraud had parole requests denied this week, authorities said.
Owen Laine Rea is serving a 25-year sentence for the Colbert County murder of Steven Gooch, authorities said.
Ronald Warren Powell is serving a 7-year sentence after pleading guilty of securities and insurance fraud, according to Alabama Department of Corrections records.
Rae has served 23 years, 8 months, 9 days, and also served a concurrent 5-year sentence for enticing a child for immoral purposes, according to the corrections department.
Rae beat Gooch seven or eight times in the head with a blunt instrument in 1995, according to court records.
Powell has served 1 year, 8 months, 24 days of his sentence, according to corrections records.
The Alabama Securities Commission and Alabama Department of Insurance joined forces for an investigation into Powell, leading to his indictment, according to officials.
The indictment claimed he acted as an insurance and financial agent to defraud customers of money.
